Robert Raises Over £2500 for Leeds Hospital Ward with a Virtual Everest Challenge

Updated 15/07/2020

After completing a gruelling 10-day cycle from John O’Groats to Lands’ End in 2013, one of our designers, Robert Duckworth took it upon himself to continue his fundraising for the NHS with a Virtual Everesting Challenge. After suffering life-threatening injuries in a car accident, he wanted to repay his thanks to the NHS staff who helped him reach a full recovery.

Not heard of Everesting? It’s basically setting yourself a challenge of walking or cycling the height of Mount Everest (8,848m) by continuously climbing and then declining the same hill. It’s that “simple”. Virtual Everesting is almost the same, however, it’s completed at home using specialist equipment such as a trainer and computer software. You can choose your route and watch your avatar cycle through the scenery.

It might sound pleasant, but the challenge is not one to underestimate. Robert chose Alpe du Zwift, a 7.6-mile virtual route with an elevation gain of 1,000m. This meant completing the route 8.5 times to finish the challenge.

With the trainer set up in his garage, Robert started pedalling.

The first ascent took just under an hour but the challenge was only going to get tougher as tiredness and fatigue set in.

Using live streaming platforms to keep his mind occupied and having passers-by cheering him on, Robert was able to push on through the toughest hours. To boost his morale even further, other virtual cyclists joined him on his last leg pushing him over the finish line.

14 hours of uphill pedalling was complete and a lifetime achievement gained.

“There were times when I wanted to throw in the towel and call it a day, but it was the support from others that helped me push through. I want to say a massive thank you to those that helped and an even bigger thank you to the NHS staff. Nothing I will ever do will show my gratitude to what the staff of the NHS have done.”
